This course gives students lessons in nouns, verbs, pronouns and articles. It allows them a lot of practice through meaningful and challenging exercises which are related to the grammatical points presented in this course.

This course is the first in a series of courses designed to help students improve their reading skills with an effective and stimulating approach and acquire the tools and strategies they will need to study and comprehend college–level material. Each lesson is introduced with a set of warm- up questions that gently leads the learner to the main topic. Both top-down and bottom-up procedures should be used.

The principal aim is to consolidate what the students are supposed to have learnt at the secondary level and to build up the basic skills of writing. The first objective of the course is to provide the student with a variety of suitable materials for developing writing. Students are introduced to the sentence to help them to identify its parts and types. Then, they deal with some types of sentence problems to avoid such problems. They also deal with capitalization rules, spelling and punctuation to improve their writing.

The course Listening and Speaking 1 is expected to be used for giving prerecorded listening input unit-wise and making the students repeat it. These conversation inputs should be used for creating different situations of a similar nature making the students use the language freely which they have already been given.

After a short introduction to what Phonetics is all about, the course provides discussions on the place and manner of articulation of the speech organs, the consonant and vowel sounds in English and a presentation of the Cardinal Vowel Diagram. It also provides practice to improve the students’ pronunciation skills.

This course is to prepare students to write academic paragraphs, while introducing different rhetorical modes. The writing process and prewriting techniques are central to the course. Then students are trained to write paragraphs on different topics.

Students are introduced to syllables, word stress and sentence stress. The course also concentrates on showing students different sounds of consonant clusters, discussions of different aspects of connected speech and the different types of intonation. Practice exercises on pronunciation and transcription of sentences and paragraphs are also found in this course.

This is a continuation of the Listening and Speaking I the students had in the first semester. The expressions which exhibit polite manners in different contexts will be introduced and practiced. The students should be familiarized with the concept of syllable so that they are able to break the word into different syllables and pronounce them as per the tradition of the language. It will build up their communicative competence. The English accent which is within their receptive range will be built up by means of identifying syllable stress in a word and word-stress in a sentence with rising or falling intonation.

This course further develops the reading skills and vocabulary competency learnt in the previous course. It approaches a variety of reading materials intended for learning to read with greater comprehension speed. Students should be taught how to interpret, analyze and evaluate ideas in texts. Teachers should utilize schemata with maximum benefits to perform these tasks.

This course exposes students to more thorough lessons on verbs, its perfect tenses and the active and passive voice; types of sentences, and also about adjectives. It also offers the learners practice through activities suited to the grammatical points they have been exposed to in this course.

This course provides students with comprehensive lessons in modal auxiliary verbs, prepositions and adverbs. It also allows them practice in using the said grammar lessons through relevant exercises.

The course provides students with high-interest reading passages from authentic sources that act as springboards into reading comprehension activities, reading skills development, vocabulary building, grammatical analysis and practice, and thought-provoking discussion and writing.

The practice of listening and speaking will continue in this semester with the aim of developing the consciousness about the stress pattern of English language in conversation. The students’ conversational ability will be systematically monitored by the tutor with the topics specified in this course. The students are expected to handle the basic English expressions in the real-life situations and respond to them.

Students are given the opportunity to explore their opinions, discuss their ideas, and share their experiences through written communication. In this course students are introduced to the nature of language and the basic principles of linguistic theory. This includes definitions of language and linguistics, characteristics of human language, levels of linguistic analysis, branches of linguistics, major schools and basic distinctions in linguistics. Phonology is also included, preceded by a review of Phonetics

The course discusses where creative writing comes from, the various forms it has taken, and why we teach and learn the arts of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. It looks at creative writing in performance; as public art, as visual art, as literature and as an act of community. Then, students practice writing about books/films and short stories.

In this course students are introduced to another main sub-field of linguistics which is morphology. Discussions of syntax and semantics are also given to appreciate their position in the study of linguistics.

The aim of the course is to provide the student with a variety of suitable material for writing. The most important aim is to introduce the concept of academic Writing and specifically to train the students to use the academic styles. Then students are introduced to paraphrasing, summarizing, quotations and referencing. Finally, students are introduced to report writing.

This course gives students in-depth discussions on higher level grammatical structures. It enlightens them to the difference between clauses and phrases, the different kinds of clauses, absolute constructions, post modification and tree diagram of sentences which they could utilize as they explore the English language.

This course familiarize students with IELTS Academic Reading test which tests their ability to understand and answer questions at a reasonably high level of difficulty. Students will practice global reading skills( skills needed to comprehend the main idea of a text) and micro-skills ( skills to locate and interpret detailed information in a text) .Students are expected to understand opinion and attitude and be able to distinguish these from fact. They will also be expected to distinguish main idea from supporting ideas. The teacher should train them to adapt their reading habits according to the text and task. Speed is required to do all reading tasks.

This course provides strategies to help students to improve their formal oral presentation skills. Organization, presentation style, and pronunciation will be addressed. Presentations are developed through a drafting process . Individual feedback from the instructor and class participants will be given continually throughout the course.

The course provides a wide-ranging overview of the many and diverse issues in Applied Linguistics. It starts by providing an overview of Applied Linguistics and the essential areas of enquiry in it. Then, it discusses how the first and second languages are acquired. Discussions on individual differences in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and the different processes involved in it are also taken in this course

This is an introductory course which allows students to get acquainted with the translation theory and practice for the first time. It provides students with basic ideas about the translation process, the vocabulary used and the contemporary theories set out by some scholars in this field.

After being exposed to basic grammatical structures, students of this course are given comprehensive lessons on the different kinds of phrases. This course also provides students with relevant exercises that enable them to practice the skills they have acquired in the course.

This course shows students how to plan successful activities and lessons. It augments the knowledge and skills they have acquired which are necessary for them to become better teachers

After introducing and explaining psycholinguistics, students are introduced to the biological bases of human communicative behavior. Then, they are introduced to speech reception and words and meaning from primitive to complex organization.

This course further develops the skills and strategies learned in the previous reading course. It provides students with high-interest texts from different content areas. It equips students to interact with academic texts while helping them fully acquire vocabulary. Vocabulary work includes receptive and productive activities, word families, collocations , multiple meanings, and usage idiosyncrasies.

The course contains listening selections and discussion activities related to a range of academic areas. It provides strategies for academic listening, note-taking and discussions and prepares them to encounter academic lectures with skill and confidence. The lectures include elements of natural speech, such as false starts and discussions, to aid students in recognizing and deciphering language that might otherwise distract them from the meaningful content of a lecture.

In Creative writing 2, the course discusses creative nonfiction writing and writing poetry. The course also introduces students to the process of writing articles. Then, students practice writing articles.

This course covers additional inputs regarding the study of language and more theories concerning second language teaching. The course also reinforces the learners’ knowledge of certain lessons learned in Psycholinguistics 1.
